Client Brief

Our clients wanted to remove a load-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room to create a modern, open-plan living space.

Kitchen/Dining Room Knock-Through in Mount Oval

Step 1: Initial Assessment & Investigation

  • Assessed the structure to confirm the wall was load-bearing.

  • Opened trial holes in the ceiling to determine the direction and layout of the floor joists above.

  • Identified key load paths and confirmed the support requirements with the structural engineer.

Step 2: Electrical Safety Measures

  • Isolated and made safe all electrical services within the wall prior to any structural work.

  • Coordinated with a certified electrician to disconnect and reroute any affected wiring.

Step 3: Temporary Support Installation

  • Installed adjustable props and strongboys to provide temporary support for the structure above.

  • Ensured all props were positioned securely and load was evenly distributed before proceeding.

Step 4: Demolition of Load-Bearing Wall

  • Carefully removed the load-bearing wall in sections, ensuring no disturbance to the supported structure.

  • Managed waste and debris removal efficiently to maintain a tidy and safe work area.

Step 5: RSJ Installation

  • Lifted and installed the RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist) as per the structural engineer’s specification.

  • Positioned the beam on padstones at each end to ensure proper load distribution.

  • Packed with non-shrink mortar and checked for level and alignment.

Step 6: Masonry & Finishing Works

  • Reinstated surrounding masonry and made good to ensure a clean tie-in with the existing structure.

  • All joints and finishes were completed to a high standard, ready for plastering and decoration.

Step 7: Final Checks & Handover

  • Removed all temporary supports once the RSJ was fully secured.

  • Conducted a final inspection to confirm compliance with structural and safety standards.

  • Site was left clean, safe, and ready for the next phase of renovation works.

Project Outcome

The completed project successfully transformed two separate rooms into a bright and contemporary open-plan kitchen and dining space. By removing the dividing wall and creating a seamless layout, the home now benefits from improved flow, increased natural light, and a more sociable environment for everyday living.
The newly opened space provides a modern family-focused layout that enhances both functionality and comfort, while creating a welcoming area ideal for cooking, dining, and entertaining.
